Background of the Study

Open defecation poses significant health risks and environmental challenges, particularly in rural areas like Gashua Local Government Area (LGA) in Yobe State, Nigeria. It contributes to the spread of waterborne diseases, environmental degradation, and social stigmatization. Development communication plays a crucial role in addressing this practice by fostering awareness, encouraging behavioral change, and mobilizing communities toward sustainable sanitation practices. Communication approaches such as participatory radio programs, community-led sanitation dialogues, and multimedia campaigns have proven effective in altering perceptions and practices related to open defecation (Akinola & Yusuf, 2023; Bello et al., 2024). Research highlights the importance of culturally sensitive and locally tailored communication strategies in promoting health and sanitation behaviors (Ahmed & Musa, 2025). This study explores the effectiveness of development communication in driving behavioral change and eradicating open defecation in Gashua LGA.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite government-led initiatives like the Open Defecation-Free (ODF) campaign, open defecation remains prevalent in Gashua LGA. The lack of proper sanitation facilities, coupled with deeply entrenched cultural norms, has hindered progress in eradicating the practice. Inadequate communication strategies that fail to engage communities and address their unique challenges exacerbate the issue (Okafor et al., 2023). While some interventions have achieved localized success, sustainable behavioral change remains elusive (Bello & Ahmed, 2024). This study assesses how development communication can be harnessed to promote lasting behavioral change on open defecation in Gashua LGA.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate the role of development communication in raising awareness about the dangers of open defecation in Gashua LGA.

  2. To identify effective communication strategies for promoting behavioral change toward sanitation in Gashua LGA.

  3. To assess the impact of development communication on achieving Open Defecation-Free (ODF) status in Gashua LGA.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. How does development communication raise awareness about the dangers of open defecation in Gashua LGA?

  2. What communication strategies are most effective in promoting behavioral change toward sanitation in Gashua LGA?

  3. What is the impact of development communication on achieving Open Defecation-Free (ODF) status in Gashua LGA?

1.5 Research Hypotheses

  1. Development communication significantly raises awareness about the dangers of open defecation in Gashua LGA.

  2. Certain communication strategies are more effective in promoting behavioral change toward sanitation in Gashua LGA.

  3. Development communication positively impacts the achievement of Open Defecation-Free (ODF) status in Gashua LGA.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study highlights the critical role of development communication in addressing public health issues like open defecation. The findings will guide policymakers, NGOs, and community leaders in designing and implementing communication campaigns that resonate with local communities. By emphasizing participatory and culturally sensitive approaches, the study contributes to global efforts to improve sanitation and achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study is focused on Gashua Local Government Area, Yobe State, examining the role of development communication in promoting behavioral change and eradicating open defecation.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

  1. Development Communication: The use of strategic communication to promote health, sanitation, and sustainable development.

  2. Open Defecation: The practice of defecating in open spaces rather than in designated sanitation facilities.

  3. Gashua Local Government Area: A rural region in Yobe State, Nigeria, facing significant challenges in sanitation and hygiene.
